I have a $4000 home cinema kit with 7.1. I'm moving it from my living room to my bedroom and thus have a problem regarding space. I have bookshelf speakers which can be put on stands which will be roughly 2.5m apart or I can put them onto speaker brackets and stick them on the wall in each corner of my room roughly 8M apart.

I know putting speakers in corners is a bad idea - but whats worse having less space to work with or putting them in an awkward position. The back speakers are roughly 6M apart but can be moved easily.

  1. No you don't want to put speakers in corners. Whether on stands or mounted to the wall is your choice. The center speaker has to be in front of you, and the main left and right speakers should be at a 30-45 degree angle. In general the wider apart they are the wider the image until they get so wide apart that they will no longer blend into a seamless soundstage. The surround speakers go on the sides of the room a bit above ear level and the rear surround speakers go behind you at the same hight as the surround speakers.

You ask which is worse? Only you can answer that. Are you willing to compromise on an ideal soundstage for ease of location?
