So i am planing on studying abroad for the spring of 09 and i have narrowed my choice of cities down to two Lisbon or Barcelona. Where should i go?

I am leaning towards Lisbon because it looks like a great city and a fun one. But Barcelona seems the be the more popular choice. Also i don't speak an porchagese but some Spanish, although, i guess they speak Catalan in Barcelona.

Where should i go? Also if you have been or lived in these cites what was your experience?

  2. Hello,

I am currently living in Spain (have been for the past 2 and a half years).  I lived in Madrid for 2 years and now I am down on the south coast.

I have never lived in Barcelona but I have visited it twice and I have mixed feeling about it.  When I went there the first time in 2006,  it was a beautiful city, great for exploring and there were so many wonderful things to see and do.  I just went there again this past summer and it didn't seem the same.  Maybe it is better for visiting than for living.  But I don't know.

Some people will tell you that the people from Barcelona are very cold and closed off but others will say the opposite.  I say that you get a bit of both but for the most part they people are nice.  (Not as open and friendly as the southerners though).

I have never been to Lisbon but I have been to Faro.  Faro is not really a nice city (rundown and industrial) but maybe Lisbon is different.  Portugal is lovely though...the south is beautiful.

But if you know a little Spanish you might be better off in Barcelona.

Here is a good point...Do you want to learn a language?

If you want to learn Spanish choose Barcelona

If you want to learn Portuguese choose Lisbon.

But either choice you make, you will be going somewhere amazing AND very close together compared to the distances in North America.

    Hope that helps.

    Diana :)
