“The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with the thoughts of other men” (Bill Beattie).

  1. I agree with teacupn and teachers told to teach the MAP which leaves little time for what is in the curriculum. Then administration tells the teachers what needs to be taught and changes made to the classroom; leaving little room that let students work on projects  to improve their minds.

  2. Yes, well, it boils down to this. Teachers have become social workers, parents and psychologists, providers (more school supplies are bought by teachers for their students, than by the students' parents). Because teachers are asked to do so much, there is little time for them to do what they do best...teach.

Math, science, strong verbal, reading and writing skills, history. Tempered with music and art and physical education. In that order. This is what is needed.

Parents need to teach responsibility, cleanliness, good eating habits, make sure their children are properly dressed and supplied to go to school and help their children get their school work completed. Parents need to teach respectfulness to their children and good manners.

The more parenting responsibility that is placed on the backs of teachers, the less likely the child will have time to learn the basics that parents complain aren't being taught, because the teachers have no time left to do so.

Where should education aim? At the Parents.
