My husband & I are both under 35 years old & have 2 daughters that are in elementary school. We have lived in Florida all of our lives. I was born in Cuba and my husband is african american. We've read up on & have watched a few shows where americans have relocated to start over again in foreign countries. We're hoping that we can do the same. In a perfect world we would find a home directly on the beach in a good area with good schools for our daughters at a very cheap price so we can have enough money to live good & start a new business. We have a total of $150K to start over. For the past week we have been researching online several different places (Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico, Dominican Republic, etc) but the homes on the water are way more than what we can afford. Places where other americans have relocated to seem to be getting as expensive as the US. Is our budget realistic? If so where do u sugeest we move to? Any info, experiences, advice, etc would be appreciated

  2. I think it's a great idea to consider moving to another country. Keep in mind, though, it can cost A LOT to relocate. Make sure you research and budget for relocation costs. (Shipping personal items and/or purchasing everything once you are there, shipping a car/buying a car, import taxes, visa/residency fees, etc.)

I can tell you from experience that Honduras is a good country to consider. All though Panama and Costa Rica are more advanced countries they are expensive. Honduras is a relatively cheap place to live but that of course is relative. You can make it as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

In Honduras living on the beach will cost you more than you would think. The coastal towns are small and simple. The closest cities are a bit of a drive. The good schools are in the cities. Most everything is in the cities. If home schooling is an option for you it might work out to live on the coast. Look into the towns of Tela and La Ceiba. They are very nice areas on the Caribbean coast. The cities are San Pedro Sula (in the north) and Tegucigalpa (in the south).

I believe just about all of Central America is similar. Don't give up hope. You can do it!!! Enjoy!

  3. A lot of retired Americans move to Costa Rica. It's a very politically stable, lovely country. http://www.mexicoadventure.com/costa_ric...

  4. MAaaaaaaaaaaan, that's a tough question..... It's so personal that nobody can really give you any advice on it but you... Especially since you seem to have pretty high standards...

And it all depends on how adventurous you really are... I mean, there are places in Central America and the Caribbean that are practically American colonies and at times you would forget you weren't back in the US but it's true that the prices travel along with you.

I grew up in Bolivia, went to an American school. There are American schools in any country but these are private schools that are relatively expensive. The rest of your expenses would be relatively low though.... And you would be really away from "home"... Ofcourse, Bolivia doesn't have a coastline but Peru or Ecuador do so if you're up forit you could try building up your new life there....

Don't mind me saying it though but.... a hummer and a porsche? I would loose them first and buy a volkswagen or something that you don't have to drive from one filling station to the next...

    Good luck!

  5. I think Panama would be your best place....the climate varies on altitude...with the money you have you could start a good business and they use the American dollar...they even have a real affordable and excellant health care for expatriates
