Russia holds a trump card with the Americans: Iran. They could flood Iran with weapons and make our lives rather difficult. This means that those weapons could get into Iraq or Hezbollah's hands through Iran. This could make the situation in Iraq much more painful. Also, if Hezbollah received weapons (through Iran) it would be bad news for Israel- one of our big allies. So in the long run (or shorter run), ticking Russia off by helping Georgia out would be a poor decision.

(Just so you don't get the wrong idea, I think that the US should help it's allies. Whats the point of them if they don't help each other?)

Yes! Thats just what we need! To send American soldiers to fight Russia, thus starting World War III. Are you brain dead? Do you have any idea what would happen if the US got involved in a war against Russia? I guess you didnt learn much about roughly a 60 year period called the Cold War.  News flash genius, Russia has nukes, Iraq does not.

Why would we help our ally over throw a free land?

South Ossetia got its freedom from Georgia in 1991.

Why would we help Georgia invade a free democratic autonomous region of the world?

We should ******-slap Georgia's president for being so stupid.

Now Russia is bombing Georgia's capital's outskirts.   Russia doesn't play.  Georgia pushed Russia hand, and now Russia is throwing haymakers.. and no one can stop them.

Sadly, I have to say Russia did the exact thing I would want the USA to do if foreign invaders tried to overthrow our neighbors.

Despite the current administration's friendship with Georgia, the USA and Georgia are not allies.  Georgia is not a member of NATO although it has made efforts to be so.

If the USA goes to war with the world's other leading nuclear power, there is the potential for massive destruction that will make all earlier wars seem trivial.
