  1. All metals are originally mined from the Earth. Many are later recycled from scrap. This is enough to get you started.

  2. The most common metals in a hardware store are- steel and aluminium.

    Both are dug out of the ground, by companies like Rio Tinto, Western Mining and BHP - Billiton (look them up).  Some major sites include Kalgoorlie, Roxby Downs and Iron k**b.

    After extraction comes Refining. Especially in Roxby Downs, where the copper ore also contains traces of gold - and uranium. Different grades of steel are created at this stage, through controlled levels of carbon. Steel can also be annealed at this stage.
