  1. On December 21st or 22nd when the Earth has oriented itself so the North Pole is facing away from the Sun. Places poleward of 66.5 degrees  north are in the grips of the cold, polar night.

On about June 21st or June 22nd  the South Pole is tipped away from the Sun, sending places poleward of 66.5 degrees south into 24 hours of darkness.

In regions inside the polar circles, the length of the time when the sun is below the horizon varies from 20 hours at the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle to 179 days at the Poles. However not all this time is classified as polar night, since there may be plenty of sunlight because of refraction.

  2. Nowhere on earth has perpetual daylight or darkness. The nearest you'll get to it is the north or south poles where 6 months of daylight is followed by six months of night.

  3. At the poles. If you are in those regions, you tend to get 6 months of sun and six months of darkness. Crazy stuff.

  4. The polar regions.
