Where there is faith there is Census for Richard Hannon
Richard Hannon is making news, whether it is King Torus for the Fortune Stakes Sandown or if it is regarding doubts about Census that are being spread due to his fifth position at Doncaster.
Failures lead to success is what the connections of Census are adamant at. The defeat at Doncaster did not diminish the team spirit. They might have seemed upset by it momentarily, but never demoralized or demotivated.
Instead of regretting the past, they are more speculative and expectant about the future.
His end of season was not very productive but the team is clear headed about putting Census to rest for a while and then preparing to buck him up in a way that he will not spare anyone in the coming season.
He shone the brightest at the CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes with a slow start and then got onto chasing the leaders, geared up towards the approaching final third furlong.
When into the final furlong, he was driven hard inside and from thenforth, he maintained the speed till the wire.
Brown Panther, also a St Leger rival for Census, came second under Richard Kingscote while third in the line was Times Up, a 3-year-old.
This was in August this season.
At the Bahrain Trophy, a Group 3 race, Census came second to Masked Marvel by chasing the leader in the first furlong and staying in pursuit till the end of the race to earn the second position.
When the same two rivals were brought to confront each other at the St Leger Doncaster, Census could not manage even a second position and ended up landing at the fifth.
The disappointment did not last long as the connections are already planning to launch a campaign for the sake of making Census a possible contestant for the Melbourne Cup in 2012.
Richard Hannon said, "He could well be one for the Ascot Gold Cup, but I know Harry Herbert (Highclere racing manager) is keen to keep the Melbourne Cup in mind and Flemington is a left-handed course, which seems to suit him well, so there are still plenty
of positives there”.
After this decision, the connections would of course hope for a much better and constructive season for the entire team next time.
