I may be going to America from the UK to study for 2 years at a community college but becuase of expenses I have a limited choice of where to study. The colleges I've found that I can afford are in Arizona, Kansas,Nebraska, Wyoming, Oregon, Illinois and New York ( I know I would probably enjoy the last two but if I dont go to one of those I want to know where is the next best place) I really want to live in a more urban, modern area of america. Where would you recommend.

  1. There are alot of great colleges in the US, but it depends upon what it is that you are going to be studying (you don't say in your post) and your best bet is to try to make a list of the schools you are interested in, go to their website and request they send you information about the program you are interested in studying and then, make a decision based upon a list of pros and cons about each school.  You shouldn't base your choice of a school solely on whether you can afford it or not because you can always apply for student loans and grants to help you pay for expenses.

I will tell you that Arizona (depending upon what part of the state you will be going to) can be more of a desert-like climate, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming are a bit more of an Old West meets Urbanized America, Oregon is more of a forest-like appeal.  I can't tell you about Illinois, as I have never been there.  New York is a sort of a 'planet' of it's own and is probably the most (culturally) diverse of all of the places you listed, but it is also probably one of the most expensive places to live.

    Good Luck.

  2. I live in New York, so I would reccomend coming here.  You'd enjoy it.

  3. I'd say Arizona is your next best option.

The heat would be an adjustment for you though :P

  4. It would really help us if you told us which community colleges in those areas you where looking at, or at least your tuition budget per year to give us some kind of an idea to answer your question.

But judging by the States you mentioned and your last statement (modern areas), then your best bet is going to be Illinois or New York, but what you save by going to community college is going to be very little due to the high cost of living in the margority of both of those states. Your next best is Arizona but many areas within the major cities are having major redevelopments at the moment and the heat is going to be a huge factor for you, you are looking at tripple digits for most of the year.

Kansas, Nebraska and certainly Wyoming for the most part is all open land, not much urbanization in those parts.

Oregon is mainly the same except with really beautiful scenery and out of all those that is where I would chose to study. You have the best of all worlds, cheap and affordable tuition, living expenses, the beaches, ocean and mountains. You are also relatively close to California, Washington and Colorado, the latter two being very beautiful states which you may also like to consider, if not they are worth going for a vacation. You also have a short journey to southern Canada, namely Vancouver, again that is worth the visit and no visa is required for such purpose.

    But your b
