Question:

Where to buy a house in Etobicoke?

Hi there,

I'm planning to buy my first house in GTA. I'm working in Mississauga and my wife is working in downtown Toronto. So it seems that some place in the middle, like Etobicoke, is a good candidate for us. As I am not very familiar with that area, it will be great if somebody can give us some advice on the good neighbour/community I should focus on. I'll call it a good neighbourhood, if

1. It is safe and has low criminal rate;

2. It is close to good elementary school;

3. It is quiet, clean and not very crowded.

Any tips will be highly appreciated. Etobicoke is large and I don't know where to start with. Thanks!

Richard

  1. I'm glad you recognize that Etobicoke is large. When you get into areas close to main arteries or transit your housing expense will go up. There are both public and separate schools near Cloverdale and Sherway. Both of these areas are close to Hwy. 427 and QEW. Anywhere you go you'll find an undesirable element. The best thing would be to get suggestions from a real estate agent. Your financial criteria as well as your social requirements will impact on location and your ultimate decision. I suggested a fellow with Sutton because he is located in this area and is familiar with it.

  2. Generally speaking, you'll want to focus your search in neighbourhoods that are south of Eglinton Avenue and north of Bloor Street. There are, of course, exceptions to this broad rule. For example, the area around Prince Edward Drive south of Bloor is actually quite nice. But the area of Etobicoke between Bloor and Eglinton quite broadly meet your three criteria.
