  1. Budgies aren't expensive anyway. I live in Cornwall and this year visited the royal cornwall show. They have loads of animals on show there including budgies in many specially bred showy colours, supplied by local hobbyists and breeders and I didn't see any more expensive than £10- £15. Common colours such as normal green may even be sold for as little as £5. I have 4 budgies and I think I paid more for mine at a pet shop than I would have if I had got them from a breeder. And not only was I slightly ripped off, but the budgies are probably more unhealthy too than if they had come from a caring, professional breeder. Pet shops don't care, they will charge as much as they can, buy inferior stock, lie, and give you insufficient or inaccurate advice. Then you have to pay vets bills to help cure the animal when surprise surprise, it falls ill.

My 4 budgies are lovely but only 1 is ringed which means I do not know their source or their exact age. They developed scaly face within a few months, something which they would probably have had lying in wait since they were born, and now at least two of them have some kind of stomach upset. My friend's grandma loves budgies and after buying some from the same shop as me, has witnessed several die very prematurely.

Definitely try a proper breeder, and if you go there and the place is squalid, or in any way badly run, then try another. I won't make the same mistake again.

Lastly make sure you buy more than one budgie. They naturally live in huge flocks and it is cruel to keep them alone. The RSPCA tell you not  to keep them alone, it's not just me! Buy a suitably sized cage. You may be able to get a nice large one second hand. If you go to a pet shop they often only have very over priced, very under-sized cages. I have seen cages only small enough to house a fly being sold for budgies. They can barely fit their head in the food bowl. They're not like tiny canaries, they're quite tall and active, needing to be able to fly from perch to perch to exercise. I got my large cage second hand for £6, so it's a good idea to search the classifieds.

  2. Hi,

Personally i think that its best to go to a breeder, in the uk go to the uk budgies societies website they give you a list of registered breeders in your area.

  3. check your local rspca animal shelter - they pick them up sometimes

  4. check out a animal shelter, donate 50p and take one home

  5. my friend peter sells them really cheap, he is in wakefield west yorks.

e mail me if you want one

  6. A local pet shop or maybe look at adverts for people selling them (and possibly giving them away)
