Question:

Where to buy dirt, not soil, to fill an area under a weed mat?

We are close to Albany, NY. I am looking for just a load of dirt to cover about 26 ft by 20 ft. It is meant to level off an area that is under a tree, and the roots are coming up out of the ground.

Topsoil is rightfully expensive, but we specifically do not want anything to grow in this area (will be a mosaic slate "floor" for a rock garden).

Any idea where to get just plain dirt?

  1. Check here:

    You can find it.

    Good luck!

  2. Well, technically, soil IS dirt, and visa versa.  But you don't need top-quality growing-dirt.  What you're looking for is "fill-dirt".  Call around and see who has some.

If you notice any construction going on anywhere, with digging of foundations happening, you might be able to get some cheap if you haul it away yourself.
