  1. Assuming you can't afford a $100k Tesla Roadster, the other options soon to be available are the Green Vehicles Triac and Aptera typ-1e.  The Triac currently has a waiting list through roughly October.  The Aptera will be released around October, but already has a waiting list as well.

Phoenix is still selling exclusively to fleets.  I wouldn't expect their prices to drop for a few years.  As for Smart, I believe they're not bringing an EV to the US for a while.  It's only available in the UK at first.

For a summary of the current and future available EVs, see the link below (includes the Triac, Aptera, and Phoenix).  The Triac is probably your best bet, and affordable at $20k.

  2. Until you can actually buy an electric car, go out and buy a car that runs on natural gas, like the Honda Civic GX, or a used Ford Crown Victoria or F-150 pickup truck. They are available now and are much cleaner and much cheaper to run than gasoline cars. California has lots of natural gas filling stations, too, so that shouldn't be a problem. Check out my sources for more info. These cars are great - I have 2 of them and I love 'em!

  3. Until 2010, there are no electric cars really viable for the average consumer. Just try to wait it out for the next year and a half or so until cars the like the Chevy Volt are released. You can get some companies to convert your regular car to electric, but those are rather pricey.

  4. This is a site where you can find what electric cars are available at this time and in the near future.
