  1. In the city? Klingbeil is a really famous and wonderful manufacturer of skates, and they are based in Queens. Call to make an appointment, and in fact, I'll link you to their web page so you can get a feel for what they have to offer.

Yes, they do have custom skates, but for customs, they are extremely reasonably priced. They also have some "stock" boots.

I'm not sure if there's a good pro shop at Aviator Sports in Brooklyn, but that may be worth a look.

If you have a car, the shop at the ice rink in Hackensack, NJ, is very good. Jim there is an excellent skate pro. I also love Richie, who works... is it in Montclair, NJ? Anyway, if you called the Ice Hutch up in Mt. Vernon, NY, and spoke with someone in the office, they could give you his contact info. He's an excellent skate fitter, and would probably travel to Mt. Vernon to fit you, rather than have you come out to NJ.

Like you, I'd rather you not buy skates online. First, there is the issue of fit. Second, a lot of modern skates need to be heat molded on your foot, or they don't fit, and that is usually best done in a pro shop.

  2. I would suggest going to your local ice rink/pro shop and they should be able to help you pick out some skates. It is certainly a good choice not to buy skates online :) Good luck!

  3. I used ebay. great seller nice skates, got skates cheap enough and shipping was great!
