Question:

Where to buy simple forward/reverse switch for DC electric motor?

I have a permanent magnetic DC electric motor. It can run clockwise and counter clockwise. To do this, I must switch the leads of the motor to the power source. It is fairly easy but I am getting sick of doing it.

Where can I purchase a forward/reverse switch that will let me change the direction of the motor. I will have no trouble soldering this onto the power supply, I just do not know what this switch is called or where to buy it.

The motor draws 130 volts DC and 8 amps. maximum so I assume the switch will need to be able to handle this. Can someone please tell me where I can buy this switch ? THANK YOU!!!

  1. It's a DPDT switch you want, or double pole, double throw. They come with or without a center off position. I'd get one rated for 240 volts and 20 amps.

Look at radio shack or on line.

    here are a few:

    .

  2. you need a double pole double through switch, or spst for short.

check radio shack, or any electric supply store.

    oops! I mean dpdt switch!

  3. go to electrical supplier, buy a 3 ways switch. We call it "double poles triple throughs switch".  It has three positions to move and it has 6 connection.

    Connecting:

connect the DC source to 2 screws in  the center position.

motor connects to upper side 2 screws.  Make a "CROSS" connection like a " X "  from the upper 2 screws to the bottom 2 screws. As you flop the switch....

    Upper.......run clockwise

    Center......stop

    Lower.......run reverse
