i will be travelling through Vietnam from HCM City to Hanoi and from Hanoi to Nanning to Guangzhou to Hong Kong in China during the Chinese New Year festival 2007. Which would be the best place for celebrating this festival if I want to experience the cultural aspects and extravaganza of the festival?

  1. Hà Nội is more old-fashioned, traditional and cultural than Sài Gòn.  Definitely skip Sài Gòn, the capital of materialism, and spend the First in Hà Nội, maybe the Second also then head to China, where the New Year celebration lasts longer.  This way you won't miss anything.

  2. Visit Hanoi/Saigon in Vietnam *before* Chinese New Year, not during, as most business would be closed during the Test festivals.  And without any friends/relatives there, it might be boring for you during the first few days of Chinese New Year there.

Instead you should then fly to China and then Hongkong during the festivals.  They have more activities there, and the experience might be more worthwhile for tourists.

  3. The Tet Holiday last 10 days in Vietnam, u can enjoy in HCMC or Hanoi, this is a traditional holiday, so they have many special evens, and cultural customs and , of course some of them differ from China.

I think u need to spend 2 place in 2 years to enjoy the atmosphere of Tet

  4. i dont know anthing about china ,and anyplace in viet nam is fun during tet BUT! it is EXREAMLY difficult to get around during  and before tet.. also it can be difficult to get a room w/o reservations. in any case if you want to expierience "the culture" of any country you got to get out of the tourest areas.

  5. HCM what a party! 1 week of food, fun, and money exchanges
