Question:

Where to donate books for the troops in central NJ?

I have a large (4-500) collection of some hardback, mostly paperback books, all fiction that I would like to donate to the troops. No romance novels here - thriller, legal, detective, and horror. What's the best way to get them into our military's hands? I'm in the East Brunswick area and would like to donate locally if possible.

Thanks so much!

  1. Your heart is in the right place, but if you are wanting your books to be shipped to deployed servicemen & women the cost could be burdensome.  If you want to donate locally without shipping fees, I've listed the URL for locating NJ veteran's hospitals.

If you are willing to ship books to individual soldiers, the organization Books for Soldiers would be the place to start.  I ship several parcels a week to Iraq, & the PO has FREE special flat rate boxes that are wonderful.

I've also listed a page of links to Books for Soldiers & several other organizations that assist servicemen & women.  Soldier's Angels is a wonderful organization that matches individuals to soldiers.  I have "adopted" soldiers through them & made quilts to be given to the wounded.

I started sending letters & parcels to deployed troops back in the 1960's, during the Vietnam war, & I'm sad that it's still necessary.  However, if they continue to serve our country, I'll keeping on making my weekly trips to the post office.
