Where to eat before a gig at Carling Academy in Birmingham?

We'll be arriving at Birmingham New Street Station and walking to the Carling Academy. Can anyone suggest a decent restaurant or pub where we can get some food before the gig? Preferably between the station and the venue so we don't have to go too out of our way.

We'd like to avoid having to resort to Wetherspoons.

Try diabelo that serves Italian. The restaurant has great reviews.

ANYWHERE around the Bullring.

To be honest, if you are walking from New Street to the Acadamy, you are walking through the shopping area which will be closing.  Your best bet is to walk down to the bullring, where there is Nandos, Pizza Hut etc, or, when you get to the Academy, carry on past it, up the hill (2 mins walk) and there are some nice pubs by the law courts that do nice pub grub and not a Wetherspoons in sight!  Have a nice night in Brum!
