Question:

Where to find a FAA medical examiner?

Before one becomes a pilot, they have to get examined by the FAA licensed examiners, right? Well I want to be a pilot but I am color blind. I can get my test results at the eye doctor but who can tell me if I am qualified to be a commercial pilot or not with my vision? The FAA or a flight school? I want to know if I am automatically disqualified, so I don't have to go any further if that's the case. Thanks.

  1. http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/

That's the official list of "AMEs".  Flight schools will often be able to recommend a local examiner as well.

BTW, even if you fail the color blindness test, it may be possible for you to get a "Statement of Demonstrated Ability", which would basically come down to you proving that you can tell the difference between the red, green and white lights that are shined at you from a control tower.  I've seen pilots get these for all sorts of things.

  2. You might also call your local Regional Flight Surgeon.  Depending on where you are, most are pretty good (some are questionable) and can talk you through setting up the SODA.
