To find the cheapest airfares, you may find it cheaper (although less convenient) to fly on one of many airlines from the US to London, and to take a flight from there to Barcelona or one of the other airports in the Catalunya region with a low cost carrier such as www.ryanair.com or www.easyjet.com.  However, you should also factor in the cost of getting from your arrival airport in London to the airport from where these low cost airlines fly from (usually Stansted, whereas intercontinental airlines generally arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick).

Alternatively, fly directly to Madrid (cheapest flights with Air Europa from New York) and either take the Iberia puente aereo to Barcelona, or a bus or train (www.renfe.es)
