  1. I'm not sure if you are referring to giant clams (such as those seen on reefs) or small clams (also known as cockles) that can be eaten or used as bait for fish.

If you are talking about the edible ones, the beaches around Goolwa have these (especially Middleton).  They are found between tidal zones, and the secret is to go into the shallow water and then sort of twist one foot down into the sand at a time.  You will feel the cockles under foot, so you just bend down and pick them up.  Collect them in a bucket with water to keep them fresh, this also helps them expel any sand inside.

They can also be found on beaches on Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas (especially Coffin Bay, near Port Lincoln)

The ones from Coffin Bay are being sold frozen by most good seafood suppliers around Australia now, and they are delicious!

If you were asking about seeing giant clams (which I believe are a protected species), there used to be some on the reef off Noarlunga, but I haven't been diving there for some time so not sure of current status.

    Hope this helps!

    Good luck!

  2. St kilda used to be the place we would go. You also take a baby's bath and crab catchers as there are blue swimmers---delicious. They are cockles not clams but make a great spaghetti sauce if cleaned , left in shell and cooked with onions, carrots and parsley in chicken soup if available and a bit of tomato paste and sauce
