Question:

Where to get an EGR valve?

My check engine soon light was on and I found out it was the EGR valve that needs to be replaced. The mechanic said I should get the part from a Nissan dealer but isn't it the same or cheaper if I get a new one online? Also I've never had experience asking a car dealer for an auto part. Is that how things work? Do I just call up the dealership and ask for an EGR valve? This seems a little suspect to me. Please clarify this process for me.

  1. It depends.....If you get the part from the main dealer you can be guaranteed that you will get the correct part as they can look it up on their on-line dealer specific catalogue, you will pay premium prices though but the part is guaranteed to be the right one.

If you get one from an internet sight you take a slightly 'pot luck' approach as some sellers sell generic parts that are supposed to fit 'all models'. They are cheaper, granted, but if it doesn't quite fit your model, will they refund you? Often the answer is 'no'. Its up to you really - do you want to pay premium prices for a part which is definitely going to fit, or do you want the cheap option and fingers crossed.

I recently bought a Lambda sensor recently for my wifes car off a website. It was £14 instead of £65 which the manufacturer would of charged. It was a universal one and  luckily it does fit and works perfectly.

  2. always try your local auto parts store before going to the dealer, they are about a third cheaper than the dealer. if you cant get it at the auto parts store then you will have to go to the dealer.

and yes, all you have to do is call the dealer and ask if they have one in stock (which is rare) or they can order you one.

  3. Autozone

  4. go to any auto parts place and get one, NAPA will be able to get you one a lot cheaper than the dealer.
