As a long time italian beef seeker in Chicagoland, here are my views backed up by hundreds of tastings at dozens of beef stands over the years-

Al's beef on Taylor is the best in the city.  DONT trust the franchises - the beef is OK - but not like the Taylor St. location.  The Ontario location is spotty quality too.

I think Mr. Beef is pretty mediocre.  I dont get the attraction.

Johnny's in Elmwood Park is the best beef in the Chicago regon, I think.  

Two other good beefs that you can find all around are Portillo's and Buena beef.  Both fairly good.

Donald's (a few Chicago locations) is pretty good too - could be spicier.

The very BEST Italian beef anywhere is at Portillo's! We won't get it any place except here. It's very lean and fresh. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Definitely Potillo's.  My husband likes the combo with double hot peppers.  I just like the regular with double hot peppers fries and a coke.  Yum!

There's a place. It's called Tony's, it's on the south side. They're kind of a tiny place but they have the BEST Italian beef. Plus it's a little out of the way so that means prices aren't outrageous like Portillos or any of these joints that spend profit advertising big. It's at 70th and Pulaski Rd (4000 west) the exact address is 7007 S. Pulaski

I can't remember the name of it, but it is on Ontario Street, right next to Entourage night club......awesome Italian Beefs!!!!  You must try that place.
