Am planning a surprise weekend away for our anniversary, was thinking blackpool but i think it may have gone downhill a bit lately. We both love funfairs and beaches, dont really want to go to a city. We live in the midlands so devon is a bit too far...

  1. Llandudno is a lovely place to go and not too far from birmingham either, its not got a funfair but has a great pier with attractions on it, the beach is good too with a punch and judy and donkeys its quite a revelation  and could be termed as an old fashioned holiday place from times gone by, its got a great shopping area also with lots of bargains. I think that Llandudno is a very romatic get away.  check it out If youve got google earth then you can see it.

  2. We have just come back from a long weekend Somerset, which isn't too far away from the Midlands, and I REALLY cannot blame you for not wanting to go to Blackpool, as it's a Chav hole.

We toured around Exmoor, which is absolutely gorgeous, and has some of the most stunning scenery anywhere in England, but if you like funfairs, and the like, maybe Minehead is your  type of place, and Butlins would suit you. (Not my cup of tea, but we are all different I suppose.) From Birmingham, I would say Minehead is about a 2 hour drive, but is about the nearest decent seaside resort from the midlands.

Weston-Super-Mare, and also Burnham-on-Sea, are nearer, but believe me, they are absolute dumps, and not suitable for a romantic anniversary break, and you may as well stay on the motorway for an extra 20 minutes for some really nice places. Don't dismiss Devon, as it's not that far down the motorway from Somerset.

  3. how about Great Yarmouth...there is everything you like there...might be an idea?  happy anniversary by the way!!

  4. www.eastwellmanor.co.uk very nice, within easy drive of the historic cities of Canterbury and Rochester and not far from the Kent coast of Herne Bay, Whitstable, Ramsgate, Margate

  5. Go to the north of Scotland.  There is nowhere more romantic than Loch Ness. (Even if you don't see Nessie!)

  6. Brighton ...  it's got the funfairs, it's by the sea (although the beach is shingle and not sand), it's got loads of nightlife, but is not run down and is very arty ... if you do go, check out The Laines, the area with the old fashioned quirky shops

  7. llangothlen north wales is a good start, try the 'chainbridge hotel'
