  1. For starters, July is the middle of winter in Uruguay! Summer fruits there are aplenty in January and February but not in July.

The food in Uruguay is quite good, not radically different from that in Argentina with an emphasis on wine and meat. In Montevideo, Punta del Esta, Colonia de Sacramento and the few other touristy places there are lots of restaurant choices with excellent food.

The weather in July is not too different from many places in the southern and western US in midwinter, sunny days and chilly nights with rain off and on. Take a warm coat and take, or better yet buy (prices on wool items are good), a sweater.

My experience suggests that Uruguay is a little more expensive than Argentina but cheap by US or European standards. A good restaurant meal with a glass of nice local wine and a steak is less than $20 US, and a good hotel in Montevideo should set you back less than $60US.
