  1. Honestly, the US is so massive it would be hard to even start.  I would suggest getting an Atlas of the US and pick up a few tour books.  Pick ones of different styles - like your basic Lonely Planet or Fodors and then one's that are more stylized.  Like perhaps one on great places to eat, or a tour book for adventurers and then the one's they do on touring the Americana aspect of the US.  Then you could map your trip accordingly.

There's all the obvious stuff - New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Williamsburg/Jamestown, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami....etc.

Grand Canyon, Rockies, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, The Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Yosmite...

It's a good thing you're giving yourself a year or two.  I travelled across the US from New York to Los Angeles so from personal experience, there is nothing like seeing the US from a car.  You truly experience the people, the landscape and see first hand how diverse this country is.

  2. Well it's much cheaper if you have families that live in the country that you can stay with and get free cooked meals instead of paying for a hotel and buying restaurant foods all the time. The best places to visit are city areas such as las vegas, New york city, etc...

If your decide to bring the kids along with you, try going somewhere that the whole family will enjoy such as Orlando florida... they have disneyworld, sea world, tons of hotels (hotels that you can choose from depending on your price range, what u can afford, the environment, etc...)

I'd recommend that you travel with someone, just so that you can enjoy the experience instead of being by yourself, no one likes being alone lol.

What you need to know before you take your trip here is that gas prices and other things are going up like crazy, so i suggest you use public transportation (depending on where u go) or stay with a family member that already has a car.

... and remember to have fun :-)

  3. NYC, NY-My favorite places to go in the city are:

    Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

    Museum of Natural History

Marriott Marquis Revolving Dining Room--a restaurant on the 45th floor on a Marriott hotel near Times Square. The restaurant takes up the top floor of the hotel and revolves slowly so you have a 360 degree view of the city. It's really cool.

Greenwich Village--lots of cool clubs, bars, restaurants, shopping.

    Niagra Falls, NY

The Badlands National Park, South Dakota

The Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming

The Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

I personally would go by car and crash in hotels, although hotel rooms in NYC can run pretty high. Gas is pretty expensive, so if I were you I'd rent a hybrid car like the Toyota Prius or something.

  4. It looks like most people who have responded so far are into big cities.  Every country has big cities - big deal.  I, on the other hand, am not enamoured with them.  If you want to see America, go small town.

Research the best times of year to visit each area of the country.  Find out what types of local events go on at those times. The east in the fall is a big one.  Winter in the Rockies, is another.  Cowboy poetry in rural Nevada in January.  The list is endless.  If you are staying for a couple of years, you have plenty of time to make side trips to the large tourist spots.

Since it's just you and a friend tooling around for a couple of years, you might want to look into buying a quality used car and then sell it when you leave.

Also, take a look at bed and breakfast places as an alternative to motels/hotels.  You can get a real taste for an area in these places.

104 weeks and 50 states!  What a thrill!  Glad to have you!

  5. Depending on how much time and money you have New York city and Washington D.C. are the obvious choices. Maybe Disney World too. I have never been to the west coast so I can't  recommend any places to go.

  6. go to san fransisco, chiacgo, washington dc, newyork, florida, ohio, las vegas

i would buy or rent a car and just sleep in motels

  7. how fun....you def have to hit up ny, chicago, portland oregan, the grand canyon, sante fe new mexico, vegas, dc, la or most of california, denver and boulder colorado, dallas texas, kansas city isnt as big but its fun. theres tons more to do, just start driving. there are some smaller towns/cities that are worth seeing like fayetteville arkansas, i cant think of any others at the moment.

i wouldt take a massive bus, gas is way too high for that. road trip would be cheaper. just make sure to rent a small car.
