August is peak monsoon season.  Avoid cities they tend to get filthy during the rains.

All the hill stations of the Western Ghats and Nilgiri / Anamalai / Palani ranges will be green with waterfalls gushing everywhere and covered in beautiful mist.  

Having said that, the roads leading there would probably be in horrendous condition, assuming of course that there are no landslides.  Someone suggested Ooty, the route via Coonoor is very prone to landslides, you would have to take the Kotagiri route.

The Himalayan hill stations of Manali etc would also be good without as much rain as in the South or West of India.  Being off peak season you will get huge discounts everywhere.

Goa and Kerala are also promoting monsoon tourism in a big way, there  is no doubt that both states are fantastic swathed in green.  But bear in mind that it can also rain torrentially for days on end, with attendant flooding, road blocks etc, so be prepared.

All in all, the monsoon is the best season to be in India.  Enjoy your trip.

Most probably it'll be monsoon in India then...you can be in hill stations if you like drizzles or any other place depending on you like floods or drought...;-)

August is Monsoon time and it is very hot. May be you should visit hill stations which are safe during monsoons like Nainital . Otherwise you can face landslides in hilly regions.But do not go to Mumbai as now it is getting flooded almost in every Monsoon!

All the green covered hills will be soggy due to the monsoon showers but for Ladakh, which is arid in nature. But the only place which is recommended as must see during the monsoon is a small place called Mandu in Madhya Pradesh.....a medieval city with man made water tanks and pools which fill up during the rainy season. An off beat place, it is the site of a medieval royal love story. Lots of structures from that era in good condition. You can do a circuit of the heartland including other places in Madhya Pradesh like Khajuraho, Orchha, Deogarh, Jhansi etc. The monsoon does not flood Madhya Pradesh like other places in India.

Hill Stations in South India  like OOty and Munnar in Kerela. Excellent trip to Kerela with lush green covers and Back waters of kerela at their magnificient best. Incase humid then head to Munnar in Kerela only :-)

The one place I shall strongly recomend in August in India is valley of flowers. The place approachable only from july to september. The post monsoon leauty of natural wild flowers in hundreds of varieties of colors and smell is to be experienced. It is reached by road from Rishikesk via Joshimath & Govindghat. 3 days trekking is preferable.

you can also try south india as rain ceases by then.

If you are rain-lover just think of nothing except Goa.

thats monsoon season. the entire indian-subcontinent enjoys this season as some respite from the scorching summer heat. go anywhere....but remember its gonna be really really rainy! so enjoy the splash!
