Me and a friend were wanting to go on holiday to Mexico. I've never been before and don't know much about it as a country (only that it looks amazing on films and tv documentries!!)

Firstly, where would be a suitable place for me and a friend to go? We are both 20, (will be 21 in Feb, if the legal drinking is 21 then we will wait till we are both 21 so after Feb), we like to have a good time and DANCE!! :-) But not into the whole clubbing and lots and lots of drinking... So no 18 to 30 style partying holidays! Happy to do spanish style dancing but not the clubbing thing!

We both love the idea of typical Mexican culture, so somewhere with a lot of traditional Mexican food and ways of life, but not somewhere too quiet because we would be using public transport. So somewhere lively with traditional Mexican life!!

Any ideas I'll look into, and any experiences you've had yourself please tell me about!! It really looks like an amazing place to visit! Thanks!

  1. I think its law that your age group and drinking have to go to Cancun.

I think your living in a fantasy world. Mexico has a vast corruption , education and economic problems. Beautiful yes.

Whereever you go keep your eyes and mind open and you will see things here that will forever change your outlook on life.

Poverty , crime , corruption all are part of everyday life. Its Mexican reality. Sorry - I live here and see it everyday. I see young American ladies come here to Acapulco and it opens there eyes.

Cancun , Cozumel, Puerta Valleta , Acapulco , Ixtapa will all give you what your asking for.

Please keep in mind you will be a represenative of all Americans

  2. Legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. Cancun is good for a first trip to Mexico, but it is a party town and it can be expensive. the further away you get from Cancun, the cheaper it gets. the coast south of cancun is call the Riveria Maya and it has lots of options like

    Akumal

    Cozumel

    Isla Holbox

    Mahahual

    Playa del Carmen, Playacar

    Puerto Aventuras

    Puerto Morelos

    Soliman Bay & Tankah Bay

    Tulum

    South Quintana Roo

    Xcalak

Check out the locogringo link below for more info on this area.

  3. HI, you can come to Mexico City, and live all the things you want, like drinking, dance, Mexican culture, and mexican food, but all of this things are difficult if you came here and dont know anybody because the things that are going to sell to you are tourist things, like clubbings,  and a look of the mexican culture but just a look, if you want to live the mexican life, you have to know people, americans, mexicans or anybody who lives here, to show you all this things, not in a tourist way. But be careful, and use the common sense, dont go with anybody, until you have the complete information of the people.

    Sorry for the bad english.

    Best Wishes.

  4. Best Place for people your age-

    Playa del carmen

its very modern and has clubs but still has a lot of attractions for an older crowd and culture

    i reaaaaaly recommend it

  5. I guess "Michael" didn't understand that you live in the United Kingdom (England), but much of what he said is true.

Definitely DO NOT visit any cities along the Mexico / U.S. border (Tijuana, Juarez, etc.). They are extremely dangerous because of violence between the Mexican authorities and the drug cartels.  Ironically, a local television station is presently showing a series on the dangers for tourists along this border.

Try to confine your holiday to roughly the southern half of Mexico where you will get the most of the "Mexican" experience. Places like Mexico City, beach cities along the Atlantic or Pacific ocean (Tampico, Mazatlan, etc.) , or to the Yucatan peninsula (Merida, Compache, etc.). If you don't speak Spanish the beach cities will have more English speakers than most towns in the interior.

Understand that there is a lot of corruption in Mexico. Their laws are based on the Napoleonic system (you're guilty until you prove your innocence), but don't let this deter you from having a pleasant holiday there. Enjoy your Mexican holiday, but ALWAYS stay together, and be aware of your surroundings.
