  1. You can take a train from Amsterdam to Belgium (Antwerp or Brussels), or to Germany (Frankfurt, Cologne).

All within 1.5 to 2 hours travel.

  2. Holland is a tiny country. Take the train anywhere for a couple of hours and you will be in a different country of your choice.

Paris is about 4 hours away, which is always my favorite for a nice couple of days! Excellent shopping and great food!

Brussels and Antwerp are both very nice too.

Germany is not my cup of tea, but the Oktoberfest is coming up in Münich exactly the time you will be there, which is quite a unique experience!

Here's the Wiki on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest

But please don't forget Amsterdam! There's also lots and lots to see there!

  3. I highly recommend Gent or Ghent Belgium.  There is a lot of historic architecture there (if your into that).  I've lived in Europe now for three years, and so far, that is the most beautiful city I've visited.
