Question:

Where to live in Liverpool if I'll be working in Bootle?

Hi, I'll be starting a job in Bootle next September, and I'm not sure which area would be best to live in. My priorities are an easy commute to work, not being too far from a shopping area, and safety (although I lived most of my life in a large South American city, so compared to that, most of the UK seems amazingly safe to me!). A pretty neighbourhood and low rent prices would be a nice bonus.

Would you recommend actually living in Bootle? What I've been able to find out online isn't too promising, but I know things can change quickly, and living right there would mean walking to work.

How about South Liverpool, more specifically, areas like Aigburth? Nice? What would the commute be like? I'm looking at rail timetables, and the trip looks to be about 20 minutes (I'm looking at the Hunts Cross to Southport line, from Aigburth station to Bootle Oriel Rd). Would this be accurate or are there any difficulties I'm not seeing?

Thanks for any help, any advice would be much appreciated!

  1. A great place to live in Liverpool if you're working in Bootle is the Liverpool docks. That seems to be a very popular place. All the old warehouses have been re-ferbed into smart appartments. 5 - 10 mins walk from centre of town, and right next to the new main bus station. Anywhere around Liverpool be it Wavertree, Old swan, Garston, West Derby, Kirkby, would be fine for transportation to and from bootle. Places like Toxteth, Croxteth and Norris Green that have repoutations for being 'dangerous' areas aren't half as bad as people like to make out. Anywhere in Liverpool would be fine, or even the Wirral which has great connections to Liverpool and offers a slightly more rural approach to life. If you like living close to shops and city life though, the Liverpool docks are deffintaley a good place to start!

  2. Aigburth is a nice part of Liverpool to live. It's well connected with train and bus services to the city centre.

Lot's of Aigburth is pretty quiet and leafy and Sefton Park is very near.

Lark Lane is close at hand too which has lot's of bars and restaurants and a bohemian tinge to it.

Also about 10 minutes on the bus away is Speke retail park which has Next,Gap e.t.c and is quieter than the city centre.

I'm not sure of rent prices.

You'll also be close to the waterfront and the promenade which is lovely.

Like any big city Liverpool has it's problems but as long as you're 'switched on' you'll be fine.

  3. i live in speke not a very good place for crime but next to us is garston not good aswell aintree is very expensive but good to get to bootle and childwall good aswell in souuth liverpool aigburth is good dingle or even toxteth (joke) really aigburth is a great place to live did you knoe ricky thomlinson royale family(tv) lives there

  4. waterloo or crosby betterfor you

  5. crosby is nice  thorton or waterloo   are ok too and not far from bootle. south liverpool is too far if you have to travel by public transport. trains are always getting cancelled etc and bus would take to long  .you may even have to get 2 buses.

  6. Aigburth is about an hour away on the bus, the 80 runs direct from Aigburth Vale to Bootle, or you can get a bus into the city centre and a bus or train out to Bootle.  Some areas of Bootle aren't that bad and rents are pretty cheap.  If you want a nice area such as Crosby or Waterloo you will pay high rents its as simple as that.

  7. if you have to get the bus to work in Bootle then try and get somewhere near Queens Drive. That is the bus route to Bootle. It is over 5 miles long so you should have a good few options.

  8. I have lived nearly all of my life in South Liverpool but in recent years it has become ludicrously overpriced, particularly Aigburth.

If I were you I'd consider Blundellsands, Crosby and Waterloo which are a short distance north of Bootle but pleasant old residential areas with shopping centres.and even a beach.

Trendy flats made of cardboard thrown up in the city centre might be an answer - thanks to the credit crunch you might be able to drive a hard bargain for prurchase or rent but you'd still be paying over the odds for a cramped shoebox.

I have always been keen on urban living but when the very amenities that attract you to the city centre are themselves closed down to be replaced by more flats, it loses its appeal!

  9. jayem has said it all really,  Liverpool Docks is ideal, it is also very expensive, If you have or will be earning really good money in your new job then go for the Docks.

    Good luck.
