I'm looking to retire from the military in a couple of years and want suggestions on where would be the best place to live off the grid in a yurt.

  1. A yurt is a collapsable tent in Mongolia.

    GO! Have fun.

    Beautiful country and pepople.

Food is odd tho. But adventure is calling, no?

  2. Someplace with relatively mild weather; yurts are not going to survive high winds, and there's not much space in them for insulation.  I'd suggest being a nomad and moving north and south with the seasons, but this requires a vehicle and fuel which means dependence on the Middle East; that's a lot worse in many ways than being on the grid.

  3. Wherever you want. You wanna be off the grid, better have it planned out really well, though. Power, water, sewer, food supply (if you go that far). They have some really nice (and I mean nice!) yurts out there.

  4. Anywhere you want, they look save to me.  I can't remember the last time I seen a Mongolian blow past in a wind storm.  You can bet that it is windy on the Mongolian steps with the Siberian winter winds coming strait at them.

  5. Probably in Arizona somewhere. Ideally I would want to live in the San Francisco area because of the climate but I don't think they would allow a yurt as a home.

You could try my state, New Mexico but we do get some winter weather  and lots of wind.

    Good luck on that!

  6. No idea. Look it up on Google.
