Where to live in los angeles?

im trying to enroll into the los angeles film school and was wondering where a good, somewhat affordable(i know thats hard to find), but somewhat close to where the school is, place to live. ive grown up in the not soo good parts of towns and the good parts so i dont mind it being somewhat mid class border line low class but i dont want to have to watch my back when i leave my house and i do have a daughter that i would like to feel safe having in my home or around it. apartment or home whatever. any suggestions?

First off- good luck with film school! I wish you the best success, and hope to see your work someday.

LA Film School is in Hollywood. There are some nice areas in West Hollywood near Beverly Hills. This would be good because you should have the chance to "rub elbows" with the industry people you are wanting to work with soon. This would be my first choice. The higher rent payments should give you more opportunities to network.

Other ideas- Mar Vista, Silverlake, Glendale, and Atwater Village. They are all fairly good places, and close to Hollywood for your commute.

You didnt say where the film school is.  LA has all different areas, but I'd say somewhere West of La Brea would be good.  Culver city or Palms are close to a lot of things, fwy, beach, etc & the apt prices there are affordable.

We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to move here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive. If you need good schools, add a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it.

If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $3,000 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium.

"LA" is such a big place, there are so many neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even within a city or neighborhood, there are safer sections and less-safe sections.

In Los Angeles, some nice sections are West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Eagle Rock, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, West Hills, Chatsworth.

To the east: South Pasadena, parts of Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendora, San Dimas, Laverne, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga.

Along the beach: Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rancho PV.

In Orange County aka "The OC": Seal Beach , Huntington Beach , Newport Beach , Corona Del Mar , Laguna Beach , Dana Point , Capistrano Beach , San Clemente , Brea, Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest

To the west: Agoura, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Simi Valley, Moorpark.

This is not an all-inclusive list, but it's a start.

Check out the San Fernando Valley, ie Studio City, Tarzana, Chatsworth. It is a short commute to Hollywood. If you prefer the ocean, try Santa Monica or south to Venice or Redondo Beach.

California does not have rent control period. The most affordable places to live is the South Bay Area. Most apartments range from $800-$1500 a month for a one or two bedroom. Or you can try San Bernardino County, which is a 45 min drive (without traffic) from Downtown LA. The rent is like $500+  a month.

In LA, we don't live by class. Here in Los Angeles, we usually go by race and ethnicity, and even by national origin, regardless of whether you were born here or not. As an example, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans live in East LA, whereas Central Americans live in that area near MacArthur Park. They're both Hispanic, yet each live in different areas. I could also give an example for other people but I won't because I think I've made my point. Sure, there's also the people that have good income and can decide where they want to live and who they want to be surrounded by.

From expierience don't live in Hollywood (too many freeks and hobos) it seems like the stars are always there, but only for star ceremonies or something like that. Honey, nothing's "affordable" in California, but try finding a good realator. There are a lot of good neighborhoods that I haven't even seen (only heard of). I think Belaire's good.. never spent much time there but I do know it's EXPENSIVE! (Probably like BH).

GOOD LUCK, It's easier to buy a house over there than to sell one.

I live in San Francisco,Ca and i reccomend you living in San Diego better because I'm scared of going threw East Los Angeles.

Also you can try Hollywood.
