Where would I go to look for microfilmed sets of Union,SC wills. In the Genealogical Sourcebook, it mentions looking up and confirmed wills on microfilm. Would they be at the Courthouse or library? Thanks!

  1. If you are not in SC, and the will books have been filmed, you normally will have an LDS family history center somewhere near you, and can have the films sent there.  That is the easiest way I know of.  A lot of old records/ films will also often be at the State Archives.

You should be able to see ORIGINAL records at the courthouse.

Tip-  wills are excellent. If you do bite the bullet and do heavy looking, I also suggest that you consider looking into what is filmed or indexed for land records.

You may have been aware of this, but SC was among the last states to require vital records ie birth/death/ marriage. That makes the court documents even more of value to try and fill in gaps.  The other option is that you might have already done, is try doing surveys of persons with your surname(s) who show up in the census, including prior to 1850.  What that can do, is give you framework of which (Smith) men were in Union co in 1830 but are not listed in 1840. That might indicate death, but also can mean they moved or were missed.

  2. I just entered "union co sc recorder of deeds" and came up with the information and addresses you might be looking for.

  3. Are you in SC?  There is a genealogical society there that may be able to help you.  Just search on union county sc historical society.

Be sure to use SC since many states have a Union County with a historical society.

    Good luck on your search.
