Question:

Where to place Home theater in a box speakers?

I just got the Sony Bravia HT-SS2000 Home theater in a box system. Its a 6 speaker system. I would really like to mount the front speakers and surround speakers high in the corners of the walls, my ceilings are 10 ft. I want all my wires hidden. Keep in mind my house is completely built, so I am way past the frame stage. Is there a tool or very simple way to locate these areas from my attic, and also a way to run the speaker wires down a wall near a cable and electricity outlet?

If I call a home theater install company how much am I looking to pay?

  1. First, look at the first link for info on speaker placement ... you can do what you suggest, but it isn't the best speaker placement.

It isn't that difficult for an installer (or you if you want to do it) to hide wires in the walls (small holes, long flexible drill bits and fish tapes can work wonders, followed by installation of wall mounted speaker connects). I don't know what an installer would charge -- it would vary by location and complexity -- so I'd suggest asking for the hourly rate and judge accordingly (probably a day's work).

Is there a basement under the room? If so, wiring from below the floor is a possibility. Or, by taking advantage of closets, other rooms, etc wiring can be hidden.

Flat, paintable or spakleable speaker wire is available that would allow the wires to be surface mounted yet almost disappear (two types at the links)

Or, finally, consider wiring channels that allow one or more wires to be run along baseboards or up wall. While not invisible, the results look professional (see wiremold link).

    Hope this provides some ideas.
