Where to place surround sound speakers if TV is in corner of room?

I currently have a 36" tube television in the corner of my bedroom. Sort of like this: http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/3/141081.html

Only instead of a couch and a coffee table there is my bed and instead of the DVD/CD shelf, we have a dresser and mirror. This is the only way we could fit everything in nicely, so the TV is caddy cornered. My bedroom is not as rectangular, its closer to a square.

How can I place the 5.1 surround sound speakers around the room for best sound? Should I do it around the TV in the corner or place them as the TV was straight on?

  1. Do it based on where you'll be sitting: that's the most important thing. If you're sat at a funny angle then put the speakers at a funny angle. If your facing straight on then put the speakers straight on. The centre one should be facing where you plan to sit. The front ones should be equidistant from it also in front of you (and equidistant from you) facing you. The back ones should be behind you (or as close to behind as you can get) facing towards where you're sitting – also equidistant from you. It does not matter where you put the subwoofer because it's omnidirectional.

Obviously that's not always possible, but get as close as you can. It's all about where you're sat as you're the one that's going to be hearing it (not the TV).
