Where to put color tag on cheerleading shoes?

I just bought my daughter a pair of Converse Kick Out and there is no opening to slide the color tag in so it shows through the star. Am I missing something? Am I suppose to cut the fabric inside the shoe to make an opening?

shoe strings.

Take the shoe strings out of the first two or three holes,the opening is under the holes.  It's hidden very well.
