  1. www.scribd.com is the best one i have found for free ebooks but it is quite limited to the very popular books and you need to become a member of the site to download the ebooks if that is what you would like to do

  2. Project Gutenberg.  The classics online.

  3. If a book is out of copyright, probably Gutenberg has it. Otherwise check the author's website and see if he is giving his book away for free. Few do.

Any book on a torrent, Limewire, or other sharing program is there without the author's permission and hence illegal. Don't steal from authors.

Cory Doctorow gives his book away for free. So does the Baen Free Library.

  4. can't you go to the library? most books have been copyrighted so it's illegal to post it online without the author's permission.

  5. lots of books are on www.scribd.com

just search, not sure if all of them are there.

  6. I think the following site will be very useful to u.

    Link: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/
