Where to rent? brisbane, sydney, melbourne?

We had planned on living in brisbane, but some people say its cheaper in melbourne, others say sydney is cheaper. Does anyone know which is the cheapest? or are they all pretty much the same for a 2 bed house?

Having just travelled through each capital city over christmas trying to decide where we were going to live after leaving Townsville...I can honestly say it depends on what you are looking for.

If you want something in the inner city, then Sydney seems to be the most expensive, but then in saying that there were a few really good deals in there. If you are willing to move out of the immediate city area, then you will find prices vary differently between suburb to suburb, let alone city.

Your best bet is to get onto the real estate sites such as domain.com.au which will give you a wide cross section of properties in and around these capital cities. Domain sends me emails with updates on properties meeting my requirements.

it really depends on what  lifestyle you want to live, like beach or city for work etc. i would say to check out areas outside the cities as usually they are cheaper. i live in a small town 2 and a half hours south of sydney and i live close to the beach  (5 min walk) in a large 2 year old townhouse with 3 bedrooms bathroom, ensuite and walk in robe, extra toilet downstairs, garage with remote and i pay $250 a week. there are lots of cheap houses and units on the nsw south coast. otherwise i say brisbane as the lifestyle is meant to be cheaper

In Melbourne, you are looking at around $260-$280 per week for a 2-3 b/room townhouse about 2o minutes from the CBD. You can get a unit or may be even a house for about $250-$280 per week in an average suburb about 30 minutes from the CBD.

Prices are going up massively everywhere in Melbourne though, for renting and buying.
