  1. Suan Lum is still open, but for better prices go to Chatuchak weekend market on Saturdays and Sundays.  It is a sight in itself.

Take the Skytrain to the Mo Chit station, it is right there.

  2. MBK, the TAKAshimya of Bangkok, Chatuchek, Suan Lum, Chinatown... Noi 44... anywhere in BKK

  3. 1. chinatown - usually known for cheap bird's nest, shark's fin and chinese food, as well as a bustling nightlife. but it also has a visit-worthy "daylife". the wholesale market at Sampeng Lane sells a lot of knick knacks (toys, hair accessories, earrings, necklaces, some girly stuff, cutesy stuff, stationary, random items...) at very very low prices. generally cheaper than anywhere else in bkk! you can get earrings for 5 baht! although some require you to buy bulk because it's a wholesale market, not all are like that. even so, their bulk sometimes mean just 3 pieces.

around that area is also the pak khlong market - it's a fresh flowers market. u probably can't buy but it'll be a nice experience. :) the flowers are reaaaallly cheap and reaaalllly pretty.

If you're heading to chinatown/lil india/pak khlong (same area) in the day, consider taking a River Taxi like the locals.

Take the BTS train to SAPHAN TAKSIN station. The pier is there. Do not buy tickets from the tourist counter. Join the locals, follow them when they board the boat. You pay 13 BAHT to this conductor aunty onboard . Get off at RATCHAWONGSE. But stay alert and get off immediately when you see the boat parking at Ratchawongse, because the boats don't wait. They move off very quickly.

By the way, Chinatown is Yaowarat. Lil India is Pahurat. :)

    2. Pratunam - there is a clothes wholesale market here but more notably, visit Platinum Mall. it's a big aircon shopping mall, but stuff are sold wholesale and cheap. like chinatown, not every shop requires bulk purchase and bulk can simply mean 3 pcs.

    Take a taxi there.

I don't think this is useful but I'll mention it anyway. If you want to get electronic goods, next to platinum mall is Pantip Plaza. Their version of our Sim Lim. :P

    3. Suan Lum Night Bazaar - this is like a high class version of chatuchak. similar items but slightly pricier (but usually still cheap compared to singapore!) This is a night bazaar and closes around late 11ish - 12midnight. I would advise you to leave earlier, about 11, to catch the MRT back to wherever your hotel is. When it's late, taxi drivers are usually reluctant to use the meter and it's not safe. LUMPHINI MRT Station is located directly in front of the bazaar.

NOTE: BTS and MRT are two different train systems.

And if you feel like having a morning stroll in a park, Lumphini Park is a popular choice. :P

    4. Silom - you may be familiar with Patpong but don't bother to go there unless you want to join the bar top thai girls :(

but along silom road are street "hawkers" who sell clothes, bags and all sort of things at night. Yahui may know where i mean, Rev Tang brought us to the sports shop there. Christ Church is also located around this area.

SILOM MRT or SALA DAENG BTS. Silom Mrt station is one stop away from Lumphini, where Suan Lum is.

    5. Jim Thompson House - never visited it myself, and may seem a bit touristy. But i always thought it's worth a look. :)

  4. There is too much to mention. Have a look at the great links provided by earlier posters. If you are a first time visitor, I would suggest you try and find a balance between temples, the palace, shopping and nightlife. I found a boat trip on the klongs extremely enjoyable, and a visit to one of the oslands a highpoiut. There is so much to do, your biggets problem will be what to leave out.

  6. MBK and Chatuchak are nice places to shop at, both are close to Skytrain stops.  Pratunam area of Bangkok is famous for shopping.  Same for lower Sukhumvit Road, lots of street vendors, shops and malls.
