Do people try to sit in the same seat in lecture halls? I mean, for one of their classes, do they sit in the same spot each time, like in highschool?

I know theyre alot bigger, and theres going to be alot more people in the classes, so I dont really think so...but im just wondering!

What have you noticed from your experience?

  1. in small classes, people get locked into the same seats...... mid sized classes, same general area (front, back, left right) and in huge lecture classes, nest to the cutest person they can find that day!

  2. In almost all of the college classes I have taken, people have sat in the same spot. In larger lecture halls, people try to sit in the same seat, but definitely the same section.

Every smaller class I have had, students have just subconsciously sat in the same seat all semester.

I always try and sit in the same seat bc I just have a specific seat in classes that I like.

  3. Most of the classes I took did not have assigned seats, but some did. Some lectures at large universities can have over a hundred students. My friends and I generall sat in the same area, if not the exact same seats.

  4. No, I usually change up, I try to sit in the same area but I know I won't get the same seat.

  5. I'm noticed that in small seminar classes of a dozen or so people, everyone tends to sit in the same seat every time.  In medium-sized classes (15 to 50 people), people tend to sit in the same area, but not necessarily in the same seat.  In large lectures, people seem to be all over the place.  I haven't dealt with that since maybe sophomore year, but I found that in a lot of classes, I never saw the same people twice because they kept moving around.

  6. It is quite amazing but I have noticed over many years that once a student has settled in a spot, they tend to sit in that exact same spot for the rest of the term. In fact, it is hard to get them to move!

Another thing I noticed is that where you sit definitely affects your grade. Another professor and I kept track of this for three years and then published an article about it. Kids who sat in the front three rows were almost three times more likely to get an A than kids who sat in the back row. If they had a low GPA and sat in the front, they did better than their GPA and if they sat in the back they did worse than their GPA. So, sit in the front if you possibly can!
