Where to stay, eat and see in northwest Washington DC?

visiting family oct 10-14. They live in northwest Washington, DC on Carolina Place northwest. have never been there, and besides all the normal tourist attractions, are there any "to die for" cafes, bakeries, small restaurants, art galleries, places to shop, hotels? Please don't give me info that I could find off hotel.com, or on a tourist website. Every city has it's secret treasures. Thanks

  1. The Friendship Heights Metro station is just outside of NW DC and has lots of different stores and restaurants nearby.
