Where to stay Amalfi Coast?

My husband and I are spending 5 days there (including the days we fly in and out from Paris) next May.

We want to stay in the same hotel during our stay, so I was wondering which city we should choose. I've heard Sorrento or Positano are good options. Which one is better having in mind w are thinking about spending our time there visiting Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. How much time in each of these do you suggest? Any other place we shouldn't miss?

Thanks!

  1. All of those are good places to visit.

Capri - beautiful but costs $$$$.  Expensive ferry ride to the main land, expensive on the island.  If you decide to go there, I would reccomend arriving early in the morning and staying as long as possible before going back to the mainland.  Wander around the roads and just explore.  Take a taxi to Anacapri and see St. Michael's Church.  Even the non-religious will love the beautiful mosiac tiled on the floor and the architecture.

Sorrento - this is my favorite city in the area.  It comes alive at night!  Many main roads are blocked off so people can walk there. People are everywhere, shopping, laughing, eating.  Notice the lemons as large as softballs in the markets!  If you are interested in art, look for a place that makes painting-style pictures out of only colored wood.  My family has bought stuff from them every time we visit.  Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the specific store right now... it starts with a G... but any wooden inlay store is worth visiting.  I <3 Sorrento! Take time to stop in a limoncello store, where the freshly made lemon liquor is often given away as samples.  Buy a bottle or five to take home.

Amalfi - if you have a rental car, take a long, long drive along the Amalfi coast and bring a camera!  I usually stop at Amalfi and Positano during one long loop-trip.  It is beautiful, but not for the faint-of-heart drivers.  You will be on a cliff, possibly driving next to a huge tour bus, on a barely two lane road.  Be sure to look to handpainted dishes and buy at least one genuine Lemon (limone) granita.  It is like frozen lemonade, but be sure to look for one that is made with lemons, sugar, and ice (not a premade syrup).  They are cheap and delicious made with the local lemons.

If you are interested in history, you could even take a ferry over to see Herculaneum or Pompeii, the two cities that remain from ancient Roman times.  Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian) is actually my favorite of the two; it is easier to walk around and understand by yourself, less crowded, and closer to Naples/Napoli.

I could go on all day!   Feel free to email me if you have a specific question.
