Where to stay and when is the best time in year to visit Lake Garda, Italy?

I am planing a family trip with my wife and my 4 years old to Lake Garda in Italy, What is the expected weather in September / October? Please recommend a place to stay (3-4 star) for the family.

I ws there is May it was warm but still a bit cool. I imagine you should be fine. It is soooooooo beautiful there. Take the ferry from Desenzano to Limone it's about 4 hours but wonderful senery. You also can take a tram to the top of the town across the lake from Limone. There are wonderful places to stay there.

Lago di Garda is a really beautiful place to visit and the weather in Sept-Oct should be fine, still fairly warm, not too much rain.  I would definitely stay at least one or two nights in Sirmione, the small town in the center of the lake.  But it can get really crowded there, if you want some peace and quiet I would look elsewhere on the lake.  I really dont remember the name of the place I stayed but it certainly wasnt a  3 star place, but there are plenty of options in Sirmione.

I stayed in Gardone Riviera. It was a little more low key and less expensive than some of the more expensive towns like Sirmione.  The weather in Sept should be goregous. I stayed at the Villa del Sogno, but it was mostly for couples, not children.
