Where to stay in New York?

Question

On a little bit of a budget but would like to visit New York before heading home to Cali in a few weeks.

I have been to NY once on a family trip but we stayed in Four Seasons which is out of the question. So can anyone recommend a good hotel, at a decent price in a good area of manhattan?

use priceline - look for weekend nights (Friday, Saturday) when there are fewer business travelers.  I've gotten really nice rooms at the Hilton and Crown Plaza for <$200/night.
