Question:

Where to stay in New Zealand?

I am going to be in New Zealand for a week on the North Island. Where are good places to stay in any part of Auckland and things I need to see, do and eat? And what are some good side trips that are not too expensive?

Thanks!

  1. Hi

If you only have a week you would be best to limit your time to Auckland as a base. You could spend a few days here.

    I would suggest                                                                                :

Day 1 in the central city - up Sky Tower,   Maritime Museum and a general look around.

Day 2 get an Auckland Explorer ticket and visit Auckland Museum, Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium, and any other stops that appeal. - you get on and off at different places.

Day 3 a ferry to Devonport - there are great views from the top of North Head if you like walking. You may like to catch a ferry to Waiheke Island either from the city or from Devonport and go back to the city. You do need time on Waiheke. Or you may prefer a trip to Rangitoto Island. You can walk to the top or catch a small train.

Day 4 do a tour ( they have one or two day options) to Rotorua and Waitomo. It is a long day but an excellent trip.3 hours driving each way.

I f you have a look at my website http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/au...

you should get plenty of ideas. I have quite a comprehensive

    page on Auckland sightseeing ideas.

There are backpackers in the central city

This is one but there are several.Just type in auckland backpackers for some reviews.

    I hope this helps

    Have a great trip.

  2. ok firstly...who cares weather you are staying on or in!!??????

Taupo is a realy lovely  place and only  a few hours drive from Auckland ,There is so much to see there and a must i would say.I can fully recomend silver ferns hostel. Its a hotel and hostel but is FAB. and cheap!

There are lots  of thing sto do in Auckland that are non expensive,The ferries run regular  to the islands and a re great days out. There are always coaches that  run from the Sky tower if you fancy going further afield.U must go up the sky tower whilst here !     Depending on what time of year your coming you can head south and ski/ snow board. Its a 5-6 hour drive from Auckland but if skiings your thing well worth it.The north island is beautifull- enjoy

Check out  web sites to see whats on in Auckland when you are here. The sky tower alwasy has fab stuff on and Vector arena is having great concerts this year.

  3. OK firstly its "in" the North Island, not on it...

and you could try Northland eg Ninety Mile Beach

You can always take a bus or hitchhike which is normally safe or share costs with other backpackers. Stay at the YHA or any backpacker hostel, most of them are in central Auckland.

Try a day trip to Rotorua and Taupo, that's the Volcanic Plateau and there is a lot of beauty there. Or closer to Auckland you can go tramping (hiking) in the Waitakere Ranges west of Auckland City, there's really nice beaches there too. Or the Gulf Islands next to Auckland are easy to get to too, on local ferries.

Have fun its an awesome country here. Shame you can't stay longer and travel further, it really is a mini world all to itself.
