Where to stay in costa rica?

Question

I am venturing off to costa rica this feb and march to chill out, swim, and write some books. I live in nyc so im going there to escape from it all. I'm in the dark about which side to choose pacific or caribbean.

I am looking for something more secluded, like a "swiss family robinson" house, bungelo, in jungle yet close to beaches. I am more interested in hiking in the jungle, lakes, nice ocean to try and surf, maybe a town close by to shop and mingle, but don't need a big night life or scene and all the ammennities.

Also I am a 27 year old female, should I be ok/safe if I keep my street smarts traveling alone and living alone??

Try Corcavado.  It is hands down the most beautiful place i have ever been and I travel a lot.  There isn't really a town but in a place like that you don't need shopping.  The rain forest stretching down to the ocean and the beach is one of the best you have ever seen.  I have a picture of there framed and when people see it they always say it looks like one of those places you see in magazines.  And i can tell you it feels that way in person.   You will see flocks of scarlet macaws and lots of monkeys.  We didn't see any big cats but saw lots of footprints.  There are some cabins in the park and you can actually fly directly to them or you can stay south of the park in a hotel.  There is a tent camp that is great and really nice along the shore also.  Truly it is a place to get away from it all. Good luck wherever you choose and enjoy.  Costa Rica is a great country and the people are incredible.

osa peninsula is great! Also sarapiqui, san ramon, turrialba., Manuel antoniohas a lot of tourists there

I would say to try the Osa Peninsula.  It is far off the beaten track and has many "Swiss Family Robinson" type places.  Go to the TicosLand website and search for the many tour offers that we have listed.

You should always keep an open eye when traveling alone anywhere, but you will find that Costa Rica is a lovely place with very charming people. Good luck!

I would suggest Hotel Costa Verde www.costaverde.com up against the Manual Antonio National Park.  We got an openair room with an ocean view and it was incredible.  The property is huge and they have a number of options from villas to suites.  They have lots of hiking trails on property or you can do a short walk down the road to the National Park.  The beach is again a short walk.  It's not exactly off the beaten path, but it's more secluded than hotels in Quepos, and the size of the property makes it even more secluded.  Monkeys come out of the jungle on a regular bases and iguanas are always sunning themselves on the walkways.  The huge balconies were my favorite part.  

Another suggestion for that area is La Posada (a bit cheaper) http://www.laposadajungle.com/.  This is closer to the park entrance and a shorter walk to the beach and a shorter walk to civilization.  It also butts up agains the park so you have some privacy there.  

If you've never been to CR, this is a great place to start.  The beaches within the park are some of the most beautiful I've seen.  It's full of wildlife, we saw monkeys, slothes, and reptiles galore!  You'll want to start with a guided tour though, it's important to learn what you can touch and what you can't - you really don't want to learn the hard way.

They also offer surfing lessons, many excursion such as white water rafting, horseback riding and zip lining.

And most of CR is very safe if you use your street smarts.  Think of San Jose as the Detroit of Costa Rica and act accordingly there (don't wander after dark, don't wander in areas you don't know, dont' carry valuables, etc).  Most of the rest of CR is very safe and the people are great.  But as with anyplace, use your street smarts.
