Where to stay in the Sierra Nevada, California area?

We want to stay in small towns off of highway 395, like Bishop and Lone Pine in December.

Do you know of where to stay if we're on a budget, looking for a pleasant clean, not necessarily luxurious place.

You may do best just to find cute places along the way.  I've never had trouble getting a hotel in Bishop.  If you go a bit north of Reno there are lots of cute B and B's along 395.  December may be a bit cold and icy.
