Where to stay near the beach in Rhode Island?

Although I cannot recommend a great hotel (RI is so small that I just drive home - never had the need for a hotel), I can recommend the best area.

You can actually camp as well(just an option) - Burlingame camp area in Charleston is good and near the beach.  The place you want to stay will depend on the type of atmosphere you are looking for.  Newport is beautiful with plenty of things to do and great hotels.  It is a little busy in the summer and definately not cheap.  I would recommend staying around the East Matunuck area - It is close to all the beaches and there are some nice B&B's near there.  Everything in RI is pretty close to the beach.  Even if you stay in Providence or Warwick (to save $$) the beach is only about 30 miles away.

My best advice for you is to look on Craigslist.com or I am sure there are other sites, and look for a beach house to rent and just skip the hotel.  There are lots of houses for rent this year (usually not many available), probably because of the terrible economy.  You could probably arrange a pretty good deal and maybe pay hotel prices for an actual beach house where you could have a view of the ocean or even just be able to walk to the beach.
