There's plenty of rules, and also an element of style.

  2. Comma Rules in Spanish

The use of the comma in Spanish, like in English, is an imperative part of any type of writing. Although some of the uses of the comma are identical to those in English, there are a few differences which should be noted. The following is a list of the basic comma rules in Spanish along with some examples:

    1. Use commas to separate items in a series.

Example: Mi mamá me compró ropa, juguetes, dulces y un libro.

**Note that there is no comma before the conjunction (i.e., “y”) that ends the series. This rule also applies to the following conjunctions: e, o, u, and ni. There may be some exemptions to this rule when used in more complex sentences.

    2. Use a comma to separate interruptions that clarify or add to what the sentence is saying.

Example 1: El fútbol, mi deporte favorito, se juega por todo el mundo.

Example 2: Es evidente, por tu calificación, que no estudiaste mucho.

    3. Commas tend to be used BEFORE and AFTER conjunctive or adverbial expressions such as:  además, así, aun así, efectivamente, en cambio, en ese caso, en fin, en realidad, en síntesis, es decir, no obstante, o sea, por ejemplo, por último, sin embargo, etc.

Example 1: El tomate, en realidad, es una fruta.

Example 2: Houston, por ejemplo, es una de las ciudades más grandes del país.

    4. A comma must be placed before propositions introduced by pero, mas, excepto y salvo.

Example 1: Teníamos mucha tarea, pero mejor fuimos al cine.

Example 2: Todos fueron a la fiesta, excepto tú.

    5. A comma is used when a verb is suppressed.

Example: Luis fue a la universidad; Pedro, a la casa.

    6. Use a comma if the sentence starts with an address to someone.

Example: Jorge, tienes que acabar tu tarea.

    7. Use commas to state specific geographic places.

Example: Me fui de vacaciones a Barcelona, España.

    8. Commas are used the same way periods are used in Anglo-Saxon languages when writing decimal symbols and vice versa. (This rule applies only in Spain.)

        Example: $ 2,000.50 (Two thousand dollars and fifty cents) → $ 2.000,50

    9. A comma must never be placed between “pero” and an interrogative sentence or a parenthesis.

    10. A comma must never be placed between the subject and the predicate.

N.B. Keep in mind that these are only some of the most basic uses of the comma in Spanish. Like any language, the comma has the ability to change the meaning of a single phrase.
