  1. L.M. Vauquelin, a French chemist, was doing work with aluminum and noticed a white powder that was nothing like that of aluminum or any of its derivatives. Vauquelin named the powder "gluinium" because of it's sweet taste of glucose.

In 1828, Wohler, a German metallurgist reduced it to its metallic form and renamed it "beryllium".

  2. Beryllium was discovered by Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin in 1798 as the oxide in beryl and in emeralds. Friedrich Wöhler and A. A. Bussy independently isolated the metal in 1828 by reacting potassium and beryllium chloride.

Louis Nicolas Vauquelin was a French pharmacist and chemist.
